WHAT IS A NOTARY PUBLIC?

A notary is a person of proven integrity appointed by the state to serve the public as an impartial witness. A notary is considered a public official and must follow specific rules set up by the state.


What type of notarization do i need?

A notary cannot advise you which type of notarization you need, you must know what you need, consult with an attorney or the entity requiring you have the document notarized prior to the appointment. The most common types of notarizations are:

  • Acknowledgment - positive identification of signer by notary, signer acknowledges signing the document of their own free will.
  • Jurat - positive identification of signer and notary compels the signer to tell the truth.
  • Oaths/Affirmations - administered to signer by notary


What form of identification do i need?

Each signer must present at least one of the forms of ID listed below. The ID must be current or, if expired, must have been issued within the last 5 years. The ID must contain the signer's photograph, physical description, signature and have a serial or other identifying number.

  • Driver's license or non-driver's ID issued by a US state
  • US passport
  • US military ID that contains the information mentioned above (The Common Access Card (CAC) is not acceptable)
  • Driver's license issued in Mexico or Canada
  • Foreign passport stamped by the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS)
  • Inmate ID issued by the California Department of Corrections (can only be used while the signer is in CDC's custody)
  • If non of the above are available call to ask about the Credible Witness procedure.
